Back in Alice Springs we startet to discover the
east McDonnell Ranges. We visited a lot of interessting places along the
ranges, untill we reached the most eastern parts: Arltunga, which was a
Goldmine in older times and Ruby Gap. A step back in history showed us how
hard the golddiggers had it in those days. Later we drove further in
direction of Ruby Gap, slowly on bad roads. The wheather was cloudy, and
with the fact, that at Ruby Gap, the river could flood within short time,
we were a little bit worried during the night. During the night we woke
up, and we saw three torches coming towards our car. They came quite
close, but turned, passed and disappeared into the dark...
The next day, we drove back over the Cattlewater Pass, and had a nice
shower and thunderstorm during the night. The flashes were impressive.
Again in Alice the headlines of the newspaper said: 'Freaky storm over
Alice'. After that we said goodbye to the outback, and left Alice
southwards. The next days, we drove a lot. Our next destination was Quorn,
where we discovered again some things about past times and the old steam
railways.
Our discoveries around Quorn took us a while. We
spent most of the nights in the near Warren Gorge. It became our base
camp. We had to give it up later, because we needed some water. So we
spent a night in the caravan park at Quorn. But in an unfriendly way we
were told that the water from the tap is not suitable for drinking,
because its bore water. Unfriendly people like there are luckily rare, the
majority of the Australians are really friendly and helpful. At the
Information centre in Quorn we were lucky to get
20 litres of beautiful rainwater. |
